2010 Colloquium Series

On Friday, March 12, Assist. Prof. Lena Mortensen (Anthropology, University of Toronto) will present a talk titled "Celebrity Culture and Spectacular Science: On the Trail of Maya Archeological Tourism." Location: Room 101, 2251 College Building (on the UC Berkeley campus). Time: 4 PM

Lena Mortensen is a cultural anthropologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Scarborough. She is co-editor of the volume Ethnographies and Archaeologies: Iterations of the Past (2009, University Press of Florida) and author of several book chapters and articles that explore the intersections of heritage politics, cultural tourism, archaeology, and identity-based movements. Her book manuscript in progress, “Constructing Copan,” traces these themes in Honduras, centering on the monumental attraction of the Copan Archaeological Park as a locus of scientific production, economic development, nationalist politics, and tourist imaginings. Lena is also co-chair of the Working Group on Cultural Tourism in a multidisciplinary research project investigating "Intellectual Property Issues in Cultural Heritage" (PI George Nicholas).

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Anthropology (UC Berkeley), Rosemary Joyce, The Graduate Assembly, and the Townsend Center for the Humanities.
