Dear colleagues,
We are off to a great start for the 2024-25 academic year! Dean MacCannell presented a very engaging talk on Alienated Leisure and Laurence Michalak will discuss alumni travel and the tourist experience on Friday, October 11. We also have several more proposals for this term, dates to be determined. However, we have scattered openings through November and early December, as well as much of the Spring term.
We are looking forward to more proposals to firm up our calendar. Presentation formats may vary, from individual speakers on a single research topic to mini-symposiums of several presenters on a mutually related topic. We also encourage works in the draft stages, as well as discussions of ideas still in development, to which we can all contribute. We are also happy to host other speaker/topic formats.
If you would like to make a proposal, please write to Nelson Graburn graburn@berkeley.edu with:
Your names(s)
Title [and type of event: lecture, discussion, video or???]
Abstract (one paragraph)
Bioparagraph(s) for each authour
Photograph(s) of the tourist place, person or yourselves
Possible dates of presentation (we generally meet on Friday afternoons during the UC Berkeley academic calendar)
During the 2024-2025 series, we will continue to use a hybrid format. If you are in San Francisco Bay Area we can have an in person talk in the Anthropology Building, followed by a restaurant dinner. For speakers who are not in the San Francisco Bay Area, we can also host Zoom events.
We are looking forward to your proposals and suggestions!
Cheers,
Nelson Graburn
