The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class is one of the most influential works in Western tourism studies, long attracting the attention of researchers who have analyzed, criticized, rethought and used it in waves since its first publication in 1976. In particular, the chapter "Staged Authenticity" has been widely accepted as providing a leading theory of 'authenticity' within the field. Author Dean MacCannell is a sociologist, with extensive field experience, who chose to head off the beaten path and study the culture of self and modernity by observing tourists and tourism. Thus, this interview is grounded in two broad themes: the structure and theories of The Tourist, and the educational background and intellectual development of Professor Dean MacCannell.
This interview appeared last winter in Mandarin and until now doesn't exist anywhere in English. Jin Lu has very kindly agreed to read Hongmei's part. Hongmei's questons and follow-up provide an enlarged view of The Tourist exploring its historic and social implications beyond the confines of tourism studies.
Dean MacCannell is professor emeritus of Environmental Design and Landscape Architecture at the University of California at Davis. He is the author of more than 100 articles and books on new social and cultural formations in highly modernized societies. His book, The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class has been continuously in print for 41 years and is translated into more than a dozen languages. He has been an active member of TSWG since 2008 and enjoys returning to Kroeber Hall, the site of his undergraduate education in the fields of art and anthropology, especially now that he no longer has to take mid-term and final exams there. Dean MacCannell has been an active member of TSWG since 2008.
